The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has temporarily halted the issuance of new tourist and work visas for citizens from Uganda and a list of other African and Asian nations. This unexpected policy change, rumoured to be related to concerns over immigration compliance and security, has immediately impacted Uganda's vital labour externalisation sector, which is a major source of foreign exchange remittances. Thousands of Ugandans who had already secured job contracts and completed pre-departure processes are now stranded, facing the loss of significant financial investments made in securing these employment opportunities.
The government, through the Ministry of Gender, is now expected to engage in urgent diplomatic discussions with UAE authorities to gain clarity on the duration and specific scope of the visa suspension. The Ministry's primary objective is to lobby for a swift resolution to protect the interests of Ugandan workers and the thousands of families who depend on remittances from the Gulf region. The halt has sent shockwaves through the country's labor recruitment agencies, which had positioned the UAE as one of the most important destinations for Ugandan migrant workers.
