The Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA), in partnership with the European Union through the EU-CORSIA Africa and Caribbean Project, has today (October 6, 2025) launched a three-day national workshop at Speke Resort Munyonyo. The forum focuses on building national capacity in the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), and CORSIA Eligible Fuels (CEF).
The workshop has drawn participants from key government ministries, airlines, academia, and the wider aviation industry all united by the goal of reducing carbon emissions from aviation and harnessing the potential of sustainable fuels to drive green growth.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Deputy Director General of UCAA, Ms. Olive Birungi Lumonya, reaffirmed Uganda’s dedication to achieving the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)’s global climate targets. She highlighted the country’s ongoing efforts to strengthen emissions tracking systems and explore the adoption of Sustainable Aviation Fuels, which promise both environmental and economic rewards.
This workshop is a significant milestone in our journey toward cleaner, more sustainable skies, Ms. Lumonya noted, emphasizing Uganda’s proactive role in contributing to the global aviation climate agenda.
Throughout the three day event, participants will delve into the fundamentals of SAF, including its value chain, certification, and emissions life cycle, as well as CORSIA’s framework for monitoring and offsetting.
The sessions will also explore Uganda’s policy direction on integrating SAF into its national aviation strategy.
Ms. Lumonya expressed appreciation to the European Union and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for their continued support, stressing that such partnerships are essential in advancing Uganda’s transition toward a more sustainable aviation future.
